Why MHID?
Many families caring for a member with mental illness face not only emotional strain but also financial difficulties and social stigma. Recognising this, M.G.M Charitable Trust launched Mental Health International Development (MHID) in 2004 as a dedicated outreach programme.
MHID aims to stand alongside such families by offering mental and moral support as well as small livelihood assistance, so that they can rebuild their lives with hope and confidence.
Our Aim
- To help individuals with mental illness access food, basic medicine and regular treatment.
- To give mental and moral support to them and their family members.
- To assist families in starting small income-generating activities through micro-credit.
- To encourage a more accepting attitude towards mental illness in the community.
Micro-Credit & Livelihood Support
Under MHID, selected families receive small, interest-free micro-credit loans to start simple businesses such as:
- Poultry farming
- Vegetable shops or small provision stores
- Cattle rearing and small-scale dairy activities
- Preparation of items like incense sticks and other home-based products
The amount is repaid in small instalments, making it manageable even for low-income households. In addition to financial help, the programme emphasises ongoing encouragement and follow-up.
